Heart failure does not mean that the heart is not working at all. It underlines the condition when the heart is not able to pump at the optimal level. The causes of heart failure are the coronary heart disease or a heart attack.

Cardiomyopathy is the damage caused to the heart due to some infection or drug or alcohol abuse. Some other conditions like high blood pressure, kidney disease, thyroid disease, problem with heart valve or defect in heart at the time of the birth can cause heart failure.
