There is no obvious reason behind kidney stones. Often a combination of factors is responsible for the development of kidney stones. Men are more prone to get kidney stones and it is seen that half of those who had it once developed it again within five years.
Some factors that increase the chances of developing a kidney stone are having history of kidney stones, or being aged between 20 to 50 years or having an abnormal shaped kidney. Besides these certain medicines are also known to increase the risk of developing kidney stones like those used in treatment of HIV and some diuretics. Taking too much protein or calcium or vitamin C and D also ups the risk.
