Heartburn or acid reflux can be caused by many reasons but identifying the causes of heartburn helps in making suitable changes in lifestyle and habits to get rid of this problem.
The causes of heartburn include consuming too much tea, coffee and other drinks with caffeine. Food high in fat and oil also causes heart burn. Besides these ordinary food items like tomatoes, citric fruits, garlic, onions and even chocolate can cause heartburn. Alcohol and tobacco also cause the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES) to relax which allows the reflex of the contents of the stomach. Eating soon before going to bed can also cause heartburn. Similarly tight clothes put pressure on the stomach which forces the food up against the LES. Stress is also a factor that can cause heartburn.
