Inflammation is usually the first reaction of the immune system of the human body to any infection, bacteria or a virus. The inflammation that we see in case of an injury or an infection is due to the white blood cells (WBC’s) coming into action to prevent the spread of infection and injury.
The WBC’s are attached to the inner lining of blood vessels and the result is redness and soreness around the affected area. The normal symptoms of inflammation are heat, redness, pain and swelling. Sometimes, however the WBC’s start treating the healthy cells as a foreign material and more and more WBC’s start accumulating at the inner lining of these blood vessels. Inflammation can affect the internal organs of the body as well as the outer body itself. Inflammation of the heart can cause swelling in the legs or shortness of breath. Similarly inflammation of the kidneys can cause high blood pressure or kidney failure. Inflammation in joints is also a common problem and it can be treated with medication, rest, exercise or surgery, de[pending on case to case.
